Before anyone can use Scoutbook — whether a Scout, parent/guardian, or adult volunteer — they must first have their own my.Scouting.org account. This article walks you through:
- How to create a my.Scouting.org account for adults and youth
- How access to Scoutbook is granted once the account exists
If you’re onboarding a new family or helping a leader gain access, this guide will help ensure everything is set up correctly.
Creating a my.Scouting.org Account (Required for Scoutbook Access)
A my.Scouting.org account is the gateway to all Scouting America online tools, including training, membership management, and Scoutbook. Every adult leader, parent/guardian, and—optionally—Scout should have their own account.
How to Create an Account
- Go to my.Scouting.org.
- You will be prompted to either:
- Create an Account (left side), or
- Log in to an existing account (right side).
- Follow the step‑by‑step prompts.
For a visual step‑through instructions and screenshots, see the PDF attachment at the bottom of this article, “How to Make a my.scouting.org Account for You or a Scout.”
Important Notes During Account Creation
When signing up your youth for Scouting, remember that the initial my.Scouting account is created for you, the parent/guardian—not the Scout. Use your name, date of birth, email address, and contact information.
After you enter your personal information, the system will search for existing Scouting America records using:
- First Name
- Last Name
- Date of Birth
- ZIP Code
You may see one of the following:
- A Member ID with no login — you can claim this record.
- A record showing Recover Account — meaning a login exists and identity verification is required.
- No matches found, which may indicate a typo or mismatch in personal information.
The attachment at the bottom of this article includes examples of these screens and guidance on how to proceed when mismatches occur.
Access to Scoutbook
Once a valid my.Scouting.org account exists and the user is properly listed on the official unit roster, Scoutbook access happens automatically. Scoutbook access is available to anyone with a my.Scouting.org account, this includes Scouts, parent/guardians, and adult volunteers.
Parent/Guardian Access
Parents receive full access in Scoutbook when:
- They have a my.Scouting.org account, and
- They have a confirmed relationship to their Scout on the official unit roster.
Once a relationship is confirmed, parents/guardians can:
- View and update their Scout’s information
- Track their Scout’s advancement, activity log, and more
- View the unit calendar and more
Scout/Youth Access
- After a Scout is officially registered with Scouting America, Scoutbook creates the Scout’s profile automatically.
- For a Scout to access Scoutbook, the parent/guardian needs to create a new my.Scouting account for the Scout. To create the account, you will needL
- a unique email address for the Scout
- the following from the Scout’s Scouting America membership:
- Full legal first name and last name
- Date of Birth
- Member ID (you can also request this from a unit leader)
- Important: Do NOT use a parent/guardian’s email address for the Scout, as this is a unique account for the Scout and will have the youth’s Scouting America activity, training, and personal information.
- Only parents/guardians that have a relationship to the Scout and select unit leaders can manage the Scout’s data.
Adult Volunteer Access
Adult volunteers must:
- Have a my.Scouting.org account, and
- To view unit or Scout information, have a valid Scouting America registration and an assigned registered position.
- After positions are approved, Scoutbook updates within 24 hours and grants base permissions automatically.
